Aging in Place

Choosing to age in place offers many benefits including no start up fee. Because your loved one will be remaining in their own home, they will continue to pay the same amount for their housing as they already do. Major costs associated with this option include any necessary home modifications to allow them to stay in the home for as long as possible, including wheelchair accessibility through the addition of ramps, widened doorways and smaller thresholds. When it becomes necessary for your loved one to have 24 hour care, an outside caregiver can be hired to ease the burden on the family. There are two options for caregivers, the first being those hired through an outside source, such as a staffing agency. These caregivers tend to be the highest paid, earning approximately $10-$12 per hour. The second option is to hire a live-in caregiver. These caregivers are with your loved one around the clock, usually requiring one weekend off each month. The benefit for the caregiver is that they are not responsible for costs of living, including rent/mortgage, utilities and/or food. In this situation, the caregiver generally earns $1,400 per month. (Pickett, 2011).
